Twenty years after the terror of First Dawn—when mankind learned that vampires lived secretly among them—the threat of violence reigns as the two species struggle to coexist. The only group preserving the fragile harmony is the Order, an elite cadre of Breed warriors dedicated to protecting humans and vampires alike. And in this precarious world of torn loyalties and shattered trust, Mira, a fiery squad captain, finds that every fight bears an intensely personal cost.

Raised among the Order, Mira has always believed in the warrior’s code of swift—and even lethal—justice. But the one thing she desires more than the Order’s hard-won acceptance is Kellan Archer, a sexy but troubled Breed fighter. In love with him since childhood, Mira once broke through his tough exterior during an unexpected night of rapture, but the next day he mysteriously disappeared, never to return.

Kellan didn’t think he would ever see Mira again—or have to confront the truth of why he left. After abandoning the Order years ago, he now leads a band of human rebels intent on carrying out their own vigilante rule of law. Yet a high-profile kidnapping assignment brings him face-to-face with the past he sought to avoid, and the striking woman he has tried desperately to forget. And as tensions mount and the risk of bloodshed grows, Kellan and Mira must take sides—between the competing missions that dominate their lives, and the electrifying passion that claims their hearts.

I forgot how much I missed this series! Sometimes when a series carries on of a long time it feels like its the same book over and over. Not the case here. It has been 20 years and so much in the world has changed. Yet it is still the same characters we have come to love so much.

Mira has grown up so much in the last twenty years and she has become a tough fighter for the Order. Leading her own squad she does what she was trained to do. She is lethal in her own way and knows how to do her job right. But one mistake puts everything in jeopardy. As a punishment Lucan makes her play bodyguard to a human scientist. Mira thinks it a stupid routine assignment, but what happens next sets her whole world upside down! Mira comes face to face with a ghost of her past, a man she has never stopped loving even after she knew he was dead.

Even though Kellan never really died he let the Order and Mira continue to think he was dead. He thought it was best for Mira if he never went back.  However when his team messes up a simple abduction and captures a member of the Order, he know immediately its Mira, and he can't let her go.

Even though it has been eight years Mira and Kellan both feel like they were never apart. Both knowing they could never be together, they can't help fight for each other. Kellan tries with all he has to rid himself of Mira before his mistakes cost her anymore harm. Mira will fight with all she has to never lose kellan again, no matter what the cost to herself. When a new threat to the Breed comes about, it is up to Kellan and Mira to fight side by side to save them all. But can they do that knowing they might loose each other for good this time?

It is so good to see all of the Order together again! I loved reading how all the mates are still happy and how so many of them have kids now grown up. I can't wait to see where this all goes and who each book will be about. A great love story with the action and passion we have come to know out of Lara Adrian's books!

5 out of 5 stars
